Wildcats Win Ice Palace Cup in Grand Forks

 

The Westman Wildcats  female midget hockey team travelled down to Grand Forks for the Thanksgiving weekend and won the U19 AAA Ice Palace Cup in Grand Forks.

The Wildcats opened the Tournament against the Weyburn Penta Gold Wings and came back in this game to win 3-2.

Saturday had the Cats playing a pair of games. First up was the Assiniboine Park Rangers. The Cats clawed to a 1-0 win in this contest. The evening match saw the Westman club start to find their legs and offence as they beat the Regina Rebels 3-0.

Sunday's final had the Wildcats facing off with the Pembina Valley Hawks. The Cats skated away with the championship 3-0.

Five Westman Wildcats were named to the Tournament All-Star Team, Goalie Darby Peaslee, Defensemen, Brandi Pollock and Danni Maxwell and Forwards, Britt Phillips and JD Durnin.

The Wildcats next action is this weekend in Hartney when the will host the St Vital Vics and the Mellville Prarie Fire.

Westman Gets Sweep In Swift Current

 

The Westman Wildcats  Female Midget team travelled to Swift Current on the weekend for a two game series against their Saskatchewan namesakes, the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats.

On Saturday the Westman squad fought out a hard 2-1 win. Britt Phillips scored both Westman markers. JD Durnin got the lone assist. Darby Peaslee stopped 24 of 25 shots fired her way for the win.

Sunday, Westman came out hard against their Sask AAA host and came away with a 4-2 win and completing the weekend sweep.

Durnin lit the lamp twice while Phillips and Amy Lee tallied singles.   Kelsie Scott picked up two assists while Kayleigh Chapman, Kiara DeKezel, Teal Crosson and Phillips all had single helpers.

Peaslee stopped 23 shots in the Westman goal for her and the team's fourth win of the season

Westman Starts Season with Pair of Wins

 

The Westman Wildcats female  midget hockey team took a swing through Melville and Weyburn on the weekend and came away with two wins.

The Cats started their 2008-09 campaign on the road in Melville against the Prairie Fire squad of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA league on Saturday.  

The Wildcats graduated seven players from last season's team and along with some injuries to veteran players and college visits going on the Cats had a lot of new faces in the uniforms for the first weekend.

The Westman squad played consistent throughout the game, keeping it relatively simple but working hard. The Cats scored one in each period. Amy Lee, Laura Williams and Dani Maxwell lit the lamp for the Cats while Kiara Dekezel, Kelsie Scott and Williams tallied helpers.

Darby Peaslee went the distance between the pipes and gave up a lone goal on 18 shots to give Westman the 3-1 victory.

The Wildcats headed south on Sunday to battle the Weyburn Penta Gold Wings also of the Sask AAA loop. The Cats fought out another “W” 2-0 to complete the weekend sweep of their Sask neighbours.

Lee did all the scoring damage in this game, scoring twice with assists going to Maxwell, Scott and Dekezel. Peaslee stopped all 20 shots to record the shutout in the Cats net.

The Wildcats head to Swift Current next weekend for a double header against the Swift Current Wildcats Saturday and Sunday.

Pronghorn Athletes of the Week
Former Westman Wildcat Amy Van Buskirk - Women's Hockey

 

Amy Vanbuskirk (Brandon, MB) made an exceptional debut for the Horns and was named the Pronghorn female athlete of the week. This past weekend at the Icebreaker Tournament in Saskatoon, Vanbuskirk led the Horns offensively as they went 3-0, winning the tournament.

 

The first year defender registered a goal and five assists in the three games, which saw the Horns beat the Huskies 2-1, NAIT Ooks 6-0 and the SAIT Trojans 5-1.

Westman Wildcats Announce Assistant Coaches for 08-09

 

The Westman Wildcat  Female Midget hockey team announced their assistant coaches for the 2008-2009 season.

Joining the team this season are Dan Dekezel and Dave Scott.

Dan Dekezel, from Deloraine, will be looking after the defence this season. Dekezel has been coaching minor hockey for many years and in the last few years has been working with female hockey in Deloraine as well as been a coach of Westman South's female Bantam Challenge for the last two seasons.

Dave Scott, from Souris, will be looking after the offence this coming season. Dave also has an extensive background in minor hockey coaching in both the male and female programs.

Both of these coaches will join Head Coach Dwight Pollock to lead the Wildcats this season.

Wildcats Name Captains For 2008-2009 Season

 

The Westman Wildcats  Female Midget Hockey Team has announced their captains to lead the 2008-2009 team.

Brittany Phillips of Lauder, Mb has been named Captain of the program for the upcoming season.  

Phillips is a Senior and third year member of the program. She brings an enormous amount of experience to the position as a two time member of Team Manitoba U18 Team and a member of Team Canada's U18 squad.

Amy Lee of Brandon was named as assistant captain for the upcoming season. Lee is also a senior and is in her second season with the Cats. Lee also brings her experience as a two time member of Team Manitoba's U18 team to the program.

The Wildcats will be playing in the Provincial Female Midget league as well as playing in numerous international tournaments in Western Canada and the United States. The Cats have their first exhibition game on Sept 27th in Melville against the AAA Prairie Fire followed by a match on the 28th in Weyburn against the AAA Wings.

Three Westman Wildcats Make Team Manitoba U18 Female Hockey Team

 

 

Three Westman Wildcat players will be competing for Team Manitoba U18 team at the Canadian U18 Nationals in Nappanee, On   in November.

Britt Phillips from Lauder, Amy Lee from Brandon and Brandi Pollock from Virden all will be lacing up with Team Manitoba again. These three athletes were members of last year's Bronze medal winning Team Manitoba U18 team at Kitchener in the 2007 Nationals and will be looking at improving Manitoba's medal performance.

Team Manitoba has a warm up series with the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in September before going to the Nationals.

WESTMAN SEASON BEGINS TUESDAY
 
 
 
The Westman Wildcat season will begin Tuesday Sept 2nd with a Team meeting and dryland session in Hartney.
 
September will see the "Cats" do a series of dryland trainning sessions mixed with a few practices and a couple exhibition games to get ready for the 2008-2009 season.
