Chiefs Take Game 3

The Yellowhead Chiefs defeated the Westman Wildcats 3-2 in Hartney this afternoon.  The Chiefs got off to an early lead at the 16:50 mark of the opening period as Cass Lyttle's shot from just inside the blueline deflected off a Wildcats stick and eluded the Wildcats tender.  Westman would fight back to tie it as Ashton Bell finished off a nice feed from Paige Hubbard with 2:40 remaining in the period.  Jessica Walker picked up the other assist.  The Chiefs would restore the lead, however, as Rylee Gluska fired home a rebound that found its way into the net with 1:25 remaining in the period.  Yellowhead outshot the Wildcats 11-7 in the period.

The 2nd period saw a number of penalties called against both sides but it was an even strength goal by the Wildcats that would tie it at 2 with 4:58 remaining in the period as Andrea Sanderson found herself all alone in front of an empty net.  Once again, though, the Chiefs would fight back to take the lead with 2:22 remaining in the period as Cass Lyttle scored her second of the game as she buried a rebound from the slot.  Each team had 9 shots on net and the Chiefs took 5 of 8 minor penalties.  

The two teams would battle it out in the 3rd period but the Wildcats were unable to tie the game.  The Wildcats outshot the Chiefs 8-7 in the period.  Each team took two minor penalties.

Kaitie Slator suffered the loss in net for the Wildcats.  The two teams face off again on Wednesday night in Shoal Lake at 7:30 PM.


Wildcats Take a 2-0 Series Lead

The Westman Wildcats took a 2-0 series lead with a 3-1 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs on Friday night in Shoal Lake.  The Chiefs came out very strong in the opening period at home and had the Wildcats on their heels at times.  The Chiefs would take the lead with 2:26 remaining in the period as Karli Frederick buried a shot from the slot off a 3 on 2 rush to make it 1-0.  The Chiefs outshot the Wildcats 6-2 in the period and the Wildcats took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

In the 2nd, the Wildcats finally began to click as a team and began to push the pace of the game.  They were rewarded as Ashton Bell scored at the 15:09 mark with a high wrist shot off the rush to make it 1-1.   Aly O'Hara and Andrea Sanderson picked up the assists on the play.  The Wildcats continued to push and Bell would score again with another high wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-1.  The Wildcats kept the pressure up, causing the Chiefs to take a couple of penalties, but, despite numerous high quality chances they were unable to stretch the lead.  The Wildcats outshot the Chiefs 16-4 in the period and the Chiefs took both minor penalties.

The 3rd period was a tight checking affair as the Wildcats made the Chiefs fight for every inch on the ice.  The Chiefs came close to scoring on a goal mouth scramble but a Wildcats player swept the puck off the goal line and on the ensuing rush, Paige Hubbard undressed the Chiefs defender and slipped the puck through the 5 hole of the Chiefs tender to make it 3-1 with 11:32 remaining to play.  Ashley Seekings picked up the lone assist on the play.  The Wildcats kept the pressure up but would have to kill off a 4 minute minor late in the game to secure the victory.  Shots in the 3rd period were 5-3 in favour of Westman.  Each team took 2 minor penalties.

Jenna Marshall was solid in net, picking up the victory. Final shots on net were 23-13 for Westman.

Game 3 of the series goes on Sunday at 2:00 PM in Hartney.  Come out and support your Wildcats.


Wildcats Defeat Yellowhead in Game 1 of Series

The Westman Wildcats and Yellowhead Chiefs squared off in the opening game of the MFMHL semi-final series on Wednesday night in Hartney.  The Wildcats got on the board at the 11:28 mark of the opening period as she fired home a quick wrist shot from the point to make it 1-0. Jessica Walker picked up the lone assist on the goal.  The Wildcats would make it 2-0 with 10 seconds remaining in the period as Paige Hubbard fired a shot top blocker.  Haley Wickham picked the assist on the play.  The Wildcats outshot Yellowhead 11-7 in the period and took 2 of 3 minor penalties.  
 
The 2nd period was scoreless as Yellowhead outshot Westman 8-6. The Chiefs took the only 2 penalties of the period.  
 
At the 18:22 mark of the 3rd period the Chiefs stormed out of their own zone off the face off and Jenna Barscello fired home a goal to make it 2-1.  The Wildcats would hold off a hard push after that goal and eventually restore the 2 goal lead and make it 3-1 as Tori Williams fired a shot from the slot that beat the Yellowhead tender high to the glove side on the powerplay with 7:46 remaining.  Ashton Bell picked up the lone assist.  The Wildcats would kill off a late penalty and Ashton Bell would score into the empty net with 1:29 remaining to make it 4-1.  The Chiefs outshot the Wildcats 16-6 in the period but Kaitie Slator was solid in net.  Each team took 2 minor penalties.
 
Kaitie Slator picked up the victory in net.  
 
The two teams meet up again in Shoal Lake on Friday night.  Game time is 7:30 PM.

The Westman Wildcats defeated the Interlake Lightning 6-1 on Wednesday night in Hartney.  

1st Period

Wildcats Defeat Avros 6-3

The Westman Wildcats ended the regular season in style with a 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Avros at the Keith Bodley Arena in Winnipeg on Saturday.

Tori Williams got the Wildcats on the board at the 16:56 marking of the 1st period with a slap shot top blocker side in the powerplay.  Mckenzie Meek and Shae Vallotton picked up the assists on the play. The Wildcats would strike quickly on the following shift at the 16:35 mark to make it 2-0 as Ashton Bell fed Mckenzie Meek who finished off the nice 2 on 1 play.  The Avros caleed a timeout to settle their team and in worked.  They responded with their own goal at the 15:17 mark to make it 2-1. The Avros would strike again at the 12:55 mark as a point shot deflected off a Wildcats body to tie the game. The game would settle in after the frenzied start and the period ended 2-2. Shots on goal in the period were 11-7 in favour of the Avros and they took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

The Avros would push from the opening shift of the 2nd period to take the lead but the period would remain scoreless until 2:50 remaining in the period as Ashton Bell scored off the Rush to make it 3-2.  Gilly Gervinho and Shae Vallotton picked up the assists.  Bell wasn't done there as she would squeeze a rebound in to make it 4-2 at the 1:45 mark of the period. Brooky Klein picked up the lone assist. The period would end 4-2. Shots on goal were 11-9 in favour of the Avros.  They would take the only 2 penalties of the period.  

in the 3rd period the Avros would score at the 16:00 minute mark to make it 4-3 as another shot deflected off a Wildcats defender in front of the net. Once again, however, the Wildcats' Ashton Bell would respond with two quick goals to stretch the lead to 6-3. The first by Bell, her third of the game came at the 15:09 mark, unassisted.  Her fourth goal would come at the 14:41 mark, assisted by Klein and Vallotton. Shots in the 3rd were 9-7 in favor of Westman.  Each team took a minor penalty.  

Kaitie Slator picked up the win in net, stopping 26 of 29 shots. 

The Wildcats play game 1 of their 1st round playoff series on Wednesday at 7:30 PM in Hartney against the Interlake Lightning. Game 2 is Friday night in Teulon at 7:30 PM. Game 3 is Sunday at 1:30 PM in Hartney. 


Wildcats Defeat Interlake 3-0

The Westman Wildcats threw 81 shots on net but were only able to beat Kerrigan Dowhy 3 times en route to a 3-0 victory in Stonewall on Friday night.

Brooky Klein, Andrea Sanderson, and Haley Wickham scored for the Wildcats.  Mckenzie Meek and Ashton Bell had two assists, while Paige Hubbard and Aly O'Hara each had one assist.

Jenna Marshall picked up the win in net stopping all 6 shots she faced.  Interlake took 9 of 12 penalties.  

The Wildcats close out the regular season against the Winnipeg Avros at 4:45 PM at the Keith Bodley Arena in Winnipeg.
