The Wildcats fell behind 36 seconds into the game as a tough backhander beat the Wildcats tender. The Wildcats managed to withstand a flurry of activity over the next 10 minutes before they got their feet under them and started to push back. Finally, Ashton Bell buried a wrist shot over the opposition goalie's glove hand on a two on two rush. Courtney Ganske picked up the lone assist. The period ended 1-1. Each team was assessed a minor penalty in the period. Westman outshot the Edge 10-9.
The Wildcats began the 2nd period on the powerplay and Courtney Ganske buried a rebound in the slot to take a 2-1 lead. Mackenzie Roach and Tori Williams picked up assists on the goal. The lead gave the Wildcats some jump and they pushed the play for a number of minutes. Calgary got some momentum back on a pair of power plays of their own but it was Ashton Bell with the finish, scoring her second of the game off a rebound with two minutes remaining in the period. Haley Wickham picked up the lone assist. Westman was assessed two minor penalties and the Edge received one. The Wildcats outshot the Edge 11-8 in the period.
In the 3rd period the Wildcats withstood an early push but a giveaway by an Edge defenseman caused by a hard forecheck resulted in a goal by Mckenzie Meek. Jaedon Cooke picked up the lone assist. The Wildcats stymied the Edge for the remainder of the period, blocking shots and making simple, unselfish plays. The Edge took the lone minor penalty. Calgary outshot Westman 9-5 in the period.
Final shots in the game were 26 apiece.
Jenna Marshall was solid in net, pitching a shutout after allowing the early goal.
Westman faces Notre Dame Junior Hounds (who defeated the Central Plains Caps , 3-2 in OT) in the final at 3:15 PM tomorrow in Wilcox. Dec 11, 2015, 11:49 pm The Wildcats faced off against the Saskatoon Stars with the winner clinching 1st place in Pool C at the Mandi Schwartz Tournament at Notre Dame/Wilcox Saskatchewan. It was an incredibly fast and intense game from the opening face off. Unfortunately, some inconsistent refereeing did not allow the game to establish a consistent flow. It did, however, create plenty of exciting powerplay opportunities for both teams through the first two periods. Westman received 5 minor penalties in the 1st period and the Stars received 3. In the 2nd period, the Stars received 5 penalties to the Wildcats 1. Neither team could bury on on the odd man advantage though as both goaltenders were very solid throughout and the game entered the 3rd period scoreless. The 3rd period was a back and forth affair with both teams trading chances. With just over 4 minutes to play Ashton Bell picked off an errant pass and quickly set up Courtney Ganske in the low slot. Ganske, who was moved to forward at the beginning of the period due to an injury, out-waited the goaltender and buried a shot under the bar to take the lead 1-0. Jaedon Cooke would and an empty netter with 8 seconds remaining to seal the deal. Saskatoon took 2 minors in the period and the Wildcats took 1.
Final shots on net were 33-28 for the Wildcats.
Kaitie Slator picked up the shutout victory in net.
The Wildcats play in the semi-final on Saturday at 3:45 PM in Wilcox. Opponent to be determined.
Dec 11, 2015, 4:58 pm Kenzie Robinson scored two goals, including the winner on the powerplay, to lead the Westman Wildcats to a 4-2 victory over the Warner Warriors. Mackenzie Roach and Ashton Bell (shorthanded-empty net) picked up the other goals for the Wildcats. The two teams were tied 1-1 after the 1st period. Neither team scored in the 2nd period. Jaedon Cooke, Tori Williams, Katie Crowe, Ashton Bell, Courtney Ganske, Ashley Seekings, and Andrea Sanderson each picked up assists.
Westman outshot Warner 27-22.
Warner received 7 minor penalties while the Wildcats picked up 4.
Jenna Marshall picked up the victory in net.
The Wildcats now face the Saskatoon Stars in their last round-robin game at 6:00 PM to determine 1st place in their pool. Dec 10, 2015, 8:01 pm The Westman Wildcats defeated St. FX by a score of 3-1 this afternoon in Milestone, SK. In their 1st game of the Notre Dame tournament. The game was scoreless through the 1st period. The Wildcats were able to get rid of their bus legs as they were forced to kill four minor penalties while their opponent was assessed two. Despite the number of penalties the Wildcats managed to outshoot St. FX 9-7.
The Wildcats took the lead early in the 2nd period as Mackenzie Roach buried a pass from the corner of the rink from Ashton Bell to make it 1-0. Mckenzie Meek also picked up an assist. St. FX tied it 3 minutes later off an errant bounce from behind the net. Westman took back the lead on the next shift on a pretty passing play as Ashton Bell buried a shot off a pass from McKenzie Meek. Mackenzie Roach also picked up an assist. Each team was assessed 2 minor penalties in the period. Westman outshot St. FX 13-9 in the period.
The Wildcats came out flying in the 3rd and dominated play, forcing St. Fx to take 4 minor penalties. The Wildcats powerplay looked dangerous each time but did not manage to score until just under 5 minutes to play when Tori Williams buried a shot from the slot to seal the deal. The Wildcats outshot St. FX 12-2 in the period.
Final shots on net were 34-18 in favour of Westman. Kaitie Slator picked up the win in net stopping 17 of 18 shots.
The Wildcats face Warner at 9:00 AM on Friday in Wilcox. Dec 6, 2015, 6:16 pm Ashton Bell and Jaedon Cooke each scored two goals to lead the Westman Wildcats to a 6-0 victory over the Eastman Selects on Sunday afternoon in Hartney. Shae Vallotton and Mackenzie Roach had the other goals. The Wildcats scored two goals on the powerplay and one on the penalty kill. Courtney Ganske had 3 assists, Katie Crowe had two assists, and Ashton Bell, Mackenzie Roach, Jessica Walker, Aly O'Hara, and Jenna Marshall each picking up an assist. Eastman had 8 penalties and Westman had 6.
The Wildcats outshot Eastman 38-7. Jenna Marshall picked up the win in net. Dec 5, 2015, 11:17 pm Ashton Bell scored two goals to lead the Westman Wildcats to a 3-0 shutout of the Eastman Selects on Saturday night in Hartney. Jaedon Cooke scored the other goal for Westman while Katie Crowe picked up two assists. Shots on net in the game were 29-13 in favour of Westman. Kaitie Slator picked up the win in net for the Wildcats. Each team was assessed 5 minor penalties. The Wildcats host Eastman again tomorrow at 2:00 PM in Hartney. Dec 3, 2015, 10:22 pm The Westman Wildcats would like to extend its congratulations to Courtney Ganske, a 5th year Wildcat from Killarney, MB, who has committed to attend school at, and play hockey with, the Lindenwood University Lions (a member of the CHA – College Hockey America – Conference, in the fall of 2016. She will be pursuing a Bachelor of Early Years Education degree. Courtney, who is captain of the Wildcats this year, is coming off a 2014-15 season in which she played 67 games and had 13 goals, 28 assists for 41 points. In 29 league games last year she had 7 goals, 15 assists for 22 points. So far this season, in 18 games, Courtney has 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points. Courtney is a tremendous defender, solid against the rush, and, as evidenced by her point totals, able to contribute offensively on a consistent basis. Founded in 1827, Lindenwood is a dynamic four-year liberal arts institution dedicated to excellence in higher education.
